Trending Topics: Music Concerts and Social Media

Trending topics are the key to making social media platforms successful. Trending topics are sometimes unintentional, but if viewers find it funny or worth a repost, in no time it will become popular. The term "trending" means a popular topic that is currently generating a lot of buzz on social media. Trending topics are generally seen most commonly through videos, along with pictures, hashtags, and keywords.

How do trending topics works?

A trend on social media is a result of algorithms created by particular platforms to identify popular songs, words, and topics. These algorithms are manufactured with the task of recording numbers of likes, comments, shares, and even searches. This is visually seen with TikTok, and although not with Instagram, it is surely being used for that platform as well. As you can imagine, the most popular searches and engagement will become trending topics. Specifically, with TikTok, your "fyp" will consist of videos relating to the videos that you may engage with through commenting, liking, and sending to your friends. If you engage with videos of people getting hurt because it's funny(and hopefully no other reason,) most of your videos will consist of some type of content similar to those type of videos. Engagement plays a huge part in trending topics, but there are other contributing factors:

  • relevance: if the topic relates to current events, news stories, and pop culture, then it is likely to become trendy
  • virality: when something is shared widely and goes viral, others will see and may want to pose or make a video just like the original
  • controversy: controversial topics or issues often generate a lot of engagement, such as comment debates, video stitches, etc.
  • influencers: influencers are social media content creators that post specific content based on what will likely satisfy their followers. This gives them great power, in which if something goes viral and becomes popular, influencers will do it, making it a trend.
Trending topics have pros and cons, with some of the pros being increased visibility and awareness. Trending topics have become a key player, especially in the industry of music artists and performances.

Music Concerts and Social Media

Because of worldwide access to platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, users are able to share concerts with each other through videos and reels. Just like the social media algorithms that look for popular searches and conversations, there are algorithms specifically for music as well. This strategy involves looking for the most used "sounds" on TikTok or Instagram, leading to a "fyp" of more videos with the same song or different songs by that particular artist. The more similar the music you engage with is altogether, the more you will hear(and see) of it.
Sabrina Carpenter is an American singer and actress that is known widely for her extraordinary music. Sabrina Carpenter recently went on a 2022-23 tour all around the United States, singing in at least 25 different states. Fans have recorded and shared videos on social media of her performing a particular song, with a cute dance move in one of her "iconic" outfits. It was posted and reposted enough for it to go viral, which eventually created a trend. Because of this, Carpenter made sure to do the exact same move with the same song in all of her shows. Social Media allows music artists to be discovered beyond the country that he/she resides in, which then becomes a trend itself. People see videos of their favorite artists performing at concerts, and this makes them eager to buy a ticket of their own and see the artist in person. This is fact, considering Carpenter's tours in Europe, Canada, and Asia were all successful. Not only did this increase her international fanbase and concert attendance, but her shoes also became a trending topic all over the media. Fans would record each other lip syncing to her song, "Feather," in Target, dancing in the trendy "slam the door" heels.

Artists all over the world have been discovered and recognized from trending topics on social media. Some artists similar to Sabrina Carpenter, like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, are also examples of concerts being a major trending topic in the music industry. Although different in their own way, the two artists have similar trends to Sabrina Carpenter's eras tour, with accessories, clothes, and more. Trending topics have easily become one of the top marketing strategies for social media platforms, influencers, music artists, celebrities, etc. Trending Topics make the lives of PR managers a whole lot easier.
