Wild Card: TikTok

 Wild Card: TikTok

If you've read any of my position papers, you may notice that I reference TikTok often, like really often. TikTok is a social media platform that allows individuals to not only post videos, but post photo slideshows, video stitches, stories, engage with online commentary, shop, influence, and express trending topics all over the world. This platform, created by CEO and founder of Bytedance, Zhang Yiming, is the perfect display of a worldwide successful media platform. In more ways than some, it perfects the cons on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, even influencing particular social media platforms to upgrade their media landscpae similar to the ways of TikTok.

TikTok encourages influencers to express and extend their content to their following fanbase and create what makes them popular and what makes them money. Trending topics, such as popular makeup products, clothes, concert events, and promposals circulate around the foundation of engaging on media platforms. If you think about it, influencers are trending topics themselves. TikTok users pick and choose who they think is the best looking, has the best personality, and creates the most perfect content that they love to watch and folllow them to their heart's content: a trending topic.

"FYP" is the perfect algorithm of a personalized feed to obtain a user's attention and to maintain their attention as he/she uses the platform for hours. TikTok is described as "the app that I can't get off of." When your explore page is filled with videos that you're interested in momentarily or just in general, there's no escape.

this is too much

This is where TikTok utilizes the succession of the "fyp" algorithm to connect users with similar insterest all over the world--wherever people are using this platform. TikTok uses trending topics, such as concerts, video trends, and advertisements to identify what is most popular currently. Users are able to partcipate in trends, comment their thoughts online about the trends, and even create trends of their own.

Because of trends, TikTok users from America all the way to Turkey or Brazil are now linked closely together through a phone screen. It's all because of the "fyp." This way, users will see global videos that generally would have never been seen unless they were searched or if the explore page had just been randomized.

TikTok's vision for international use is "global reach." TikTok has revolutionized the media landscape, engineering as an unformidable competitor against Netflix and Facebook. With over 1 billion downloads in 150 markets worldwide, TikTok is titled as a "borderless content platform" because of the inexclusivity in diversity, a global young audience, and diveristy in homemade videos. In ways, the media platform is an advertisement itself. This vision allows advertisement through video music suggestions based on personal user engagement and current music popularity, which promotes international music discovery. Here are more of TikTok's impressive market penetration and user base:

  • spans across generations, making it a platform that appeals to a wide range of people
  • algorithms that reach beyond the music industry, promoting discovery of games, places to travel, etc.
  • catchy music and short-formed videos (making it "easier" to watch videos rather than on YouTube)
  • gained popularity among TikTok's younger user base, as well as older generations that find the platform creative and entertaining
TikTok is not only one of the Top 10 most used social media platforms in the world, but it is a popular advocate for promoting advertisements, resteraunts, artists and celebrities, and music. Without a personalized feed and the trending topics algorithim, TikTok would simply be a YouTube "dupe." But it's not. It's even better.
